John discusses his first years, from his early school days to his late teens. Born in 1926, he spent much of his childhood in the Great Depression and became eligible for the draft in the middle of World War II. These were also the years in which he fell in love with sailing, hiking, and exploring the great outdoors in general. In this interview, he dives into stories from all of these endeavors of his youth.
